COLONEL SANDERS - THE MAN BEHIND KFC

COLONEL SANDERS

Colonel Sanders was rejected 1009 times before successfully selling his Kentucky Fried Chicken recipe. He had failed at every job he’d tried earlier on in his life, lawyer, salesman

It’s safe to say that he didn’t have the best of lives growing up. In fact, he didn’t even successfully sell his company until he was 75 years old!

It doesn’t matter whether you’re 20 years old or 70. You can achieve what you want

Here are the Lessons:

1. You’re Never too old to Succeed

COLONEL SANDERS

Colonel Sanders was 75 years old before he finally sold Kentucky Fried Chicken for a cool $2 million. Which would be around about $15 million in the world of today. He remained as the spokesmen for the company after the sale.

But 75 years old… the majority of people, at least 95% give up way earlier in life. People stop thinking they can be successful even in their 30’s! And yet, the Colonel didn’t think this way, and ended up being the founder and face of a billion dollar brand.

So before you start to think that you can’t achieve your dreams, because you’re 30, 40, 50 years old… stop. You’re never to old to achieve success in life.

2. Giving Up is the Only Way to Fail

COLONEL SANDERS

Failure is a natural side effect of life; the story of Kentucky Fried Chicken tells us that quitting is the only failure. If you have the same outlook and faith in what you’re trying to do, the possibility of significant success is never off the table. Even when you see the clock is ticking and the days and years are flashing by, there’s no time limit on being a success. Never stop searching for that light at the end of the tunnel.

3. If everyone goes right, go left

COLONEL SANDERS

Being unique and coming up with innovative solutions to solve problems efficiently is what sets most successful entrepreneurs apart. Colonel Sanders originally prepared his chicken in an iron skillet but soon realised that it wasn’t efficient in a restaurant setting. Determined to reduce the waiting time of customers, Sanders adopted the usage of pressure fryer and modified his cooking procedure. In today’s world, with numerous competitors in each business, mainstream solutions are going obsolete, with problems becoming more complex on a daily basis. The only way to gain an edge over your opponents is to try out something different.

4. Success doesn’t come overnight

Things never got any easier even after he found his fervour for cooking. His pole star was set, but it was still a long path to go, filled with thorns to prick and potholes to make him falter. When he went around selling his chicken, people mocked him for his attire of white shirts and white pants, but Sanders seemed to be immune to those discouragements. Finally, at the age of 74, Sanders sold KFC for $2 million to a group of investors. There’s nothing like an overnight success story. Every entrepreneur should be willing to take risks and sport the will to see a project to its completion, in order to reach success. Even though Sanders’ story is a quintessential rags-to-riches story, the lessons learnt are quite different. Battling age, he tapped into an unprecedented repository of energy which fuelled him to go and start his own company. Courtesy the viral taste of his fried chicken, the chain grew rapidly and turned into a franchise soon. At the age of 74, Sanders contended that he had achieved some success in his life, sold KFC, and passed away at the age of 90. While you might not leave a trace of Sanders' fried chicken on your plate, he has for sure left a trace of his legacy in everyone's heart.

5. You have to go through failure in order to succeed

“One has to remember that every failure can be a stepping stone to something better.”

n the introduction above, I mentioned that Mr. Sanders was rejected more than a thousand times before he eventually landed the ultimate success of selling his KFC recipe. To add on top of this he had failed in a variety of careers such as a farmer, lawyer, insurance salesman, railroad fireman and even as a streetcar conductor. This just goes to show you that no matter how much failure you experience in life, there’s always time to be successful. For anyone who is reading this thinking that it’s too late for your life to make a turnaround, I am telling you it is never too late. Start re-thinking!
